Get started: Explore queries and add synonyms

You are currently in step 1 Explore queries and add synonyms of the Get started checklist. To improve the search results on your website and help visitors discover products faster, you want to know which searches return without results and what your visitors actually want to find.

Step 1. Exploring search insights using Queries without results

In Spotler Activate Search, you can gain insights to what your visitors search for. For this, you go to the Analytics module > Queries without Results. Here you see all search terms that visitors used that didn't return any products. This search data is actually customer language in raw form, and you can translate it to your website's product catalog.

In our example in the image above, you see that cardio rope and cardio robe are the top queries without results. That means visitors have been searching for a product on the website, but couldn't find it. However, it may very well be available in the product catalog, named as jumping rope. That is where you want to take action quick and connect the two. You solve this by adding a synonym.

Step 2. Add synonyms for missing queries

In this step, you will add a synonym for the query that has no result, to make your product more visible on the website. We will continue with our example of the cardio rope.

  1. Select your query and click on the + icon to add a synonym.

    💡 Use exact phrasing

Keep in mind that synonyms must be linked to exact terms in the product feed. For example: Jump Ropes or Jumping Rope will not work if the product feed contains Jump Rope. You should use the exact phrase.

Click Create "Jump Rope" to add your synonym, and continue by clicking the Save button to really add this synonym to the query without result.

  3. If you completed this step, you will see the + icon you clicked earlier is now missing for this query. ✅ This means that you successfully added a synonym for this query.
💡 Tip: add the same synonym to any relevant queries with typo's. Such as the cardio robe query in the example below.

Step 3. Test your new synonym

When you successfully added a synonym to your missing query, it's time to put it to the test. However: first 🔄refresh your data feed🔄, otherwise your synonym will not bring any results on your website. As shown in the image below, where we used the query without result "cardio rope".

To do this, go to your dashboard and click on the refresh icon at Next feed update. Or, go into the Feed  tab of the Integration module and click on Data Feeds. For more information, read this article on refreshing your data feed.

After you did refresh your data feed, test your old query again, and you should be greeted by a product that matches your newly added synonym. 🎉
